Introduction

Welcome to the Christchurch Chinese Methodist Mission!
We are a community of Christians who love Jesus Christ and are committed to the teachings of the Bible, devoted to serving the Chinese community in Christchurch. Since our establishment, we have upheld faith, love, and hope as our core values, welcoming brothers and sisters from all backgrounds to join us in experiencing God’s grace and presence.

We offer bilingual worship services in Mandarin and Cantonese, along with a variety of small group activities aimed at helping each believer grow spiritually and share Christ’s love with others.

The Christchurch Chinese Methodist Mission is part of the New Zealand Chinese Methodist Church, a faith community rooted in the Wesleyan tradition. We believe that God’s plan of salvation through Jesus Christ is open to all people. Therefore, we strive to be an open and inclusive church, embracing cultural diversity while maintaining a strong connection to our Chinese heritage.

Our History

The Christchurch Chinese Methodist Mission was established on April 9, 1995, initiated by a group of Chinese immigrants from Sarawak, Malaysia, most of whom came from Methodist backgrounds. At the time, around 30 brothers and sisters, led by Pastor Joel Siew, recognized the spiritual needs of the Chinese community in Christchurch and decided to plant a church of their own. In the early days, we held Sunday services and gatherings at the Upper Riccarton Kiwi Methodist Church premises.

As the congregation grew, we began seeking a permanent location in 1997. After years of prayer and effort, by God’s grace and with the help of a faithful church member, we were able to purchase a historic church building that previously belonged to the Merivale Kiwi Methodist Church in early 2010.

However, the 7.1 magnitude earthquake on September 4, 2010, followed by another devastating quake on February 22, 2011, caused severe damage to the church building, forcing us to temporarily return to Upper Riccarton for our gatherings.

Despite these challenges, the church did not lose heart. With God’s guidance and the support of our congregation, we rebuilt a modern church building. The construction was completed on August 30, 2015, and the new church was dedicated in a special service led by Rev. Dr. James Kwang, President of the Annual Conference of the Chinese Methodist Church in Australia. This new sanctuary has since become a fresh starting point for our worship and ministry.

Mission & Vision

Our mission is to lead people to know Jesus Christ through worship, teaching, and service, and to build a faith community filled with love and truth.
We are committed to proclaiming the Gospel, helping believers grow in Christ, and demonstrating God’s glory through practical care for the community.

We hope to become a spiritual lighthouse for the Chinese community in Christchurch—igniting the fire of faith and shining the light of hope. Our goal is to build an intergenerational, multicultural church that not only serves the Chinese community but also opens its arms to all ethnic groups, becoming a channel of God’s grace. Ultimately, we seek to fulfill the beautiful vision of “From Christchurch to the nations—spreading the Gospel to all peoples.”

Welcome

The Christchurch Chinese Methodist Mission welcomes everyone who is seeking truth and longing for fellowship. Whether you are a new immigrant, a local resident, or a traveler passing through, this is your spiritual home. Let us journey together in Christ and witness the wonderful works of God!
